The WADDANI Central Committee Summit: President Cirro’s Defiant Diplomatic Stance

HARGEISA (June 30, 2026) The political landscape of Somaliland has been thrust into a defining new chapter. The capital city of Hargeisa recently played host to a political event of immense magnitude as the ruling WADDANI party officially convened its Central Committee summit. Attended by 345 high-ranking committee members, the summit served as a critical platform to project the party's consolidated power, defend a radical shift in foreign policy, and outline a clear vision for the nation’s immediate future.

The convention was observed by the official Political Associations and National Parties Registration Commission, with formal invitations extended to the rival KULMIYE and KAAH national parties. The gathering arrived at a highly sensitive geopolitical juncture for Somaliland, following a series of historic and controversial diplomatic maneuvers that have armed President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (Cirro) and his administration with newfound political confidence.

Consolidating Power and Dismantling the Opposition

Among the most striking developments unveiled at the summit was a major political realignment that highlighted WADDANI's aggressive consolidation of power. In a severe blow to the opposition, several heavyweight political figures defected from the KAAH party to join the ruling government. The Ministers of Religion and Endowments, Youth and Sports, and Education, all formerly staunch KAAH members, officially pledged their allegiance to WADDANI.

During the summit, these high-profile defectors were immediately absorbed into the WADDANI Central Committee. This strategic maneuver vividly demonstrated the ruling party's political agility, successfully crippling the opposition's momentum while simultaneously expanding its own influence across the domestic political spectrum.

The Succession Blueprint: Hirsi Ali Haji Hassan

Beyond immediate political maneuvering, the summit delivered a highly consequential announcement regarding the future leadership of the nation. Moving to permanently eliminate any political ambiguity surrounding WADDANI's succession plan, President Cirro laid out a definitive roadmap for the party's future.

The President explicitly declared that once he completes his constitutionally mandated time in office, the current Chairman of the WADDANI party, Hirsi Ali Haji Hassan, will become the party's official presidential candidate. Chairman Hirsi is a veteran political strategist who played an indispensable role in orchestrating WADDANI's electoral triumphs. Under the Somaliland Constitution, the President is permitted to run for a second term, meaning Chairman Hirsi has been officially anointed as the heir apparent to lead the nation following the conclusion of the Cirro administration.

The Jerusalem Embassy and the Era of Realpolitik

The most explosive and globally significant segment of President Cirro’s address centered on foreign policy. The President fiercely defended Somaliland’s newly forged alliance with the State of Israel and the highly controversial decision to open a Somaliland embassy in Jerusalem earlier this month. Facing a barrage of criticism from the global Islamic community and domestic opposition figures, the President offered an uncompromising defense of his administration's realpolitik diplomacy.

"Following the recognition, we opened an embassy in Israel, and we established that embassy in the city of Jerusalem. It was the right decision, and I will not backtrack from it," the President declared firmly.

He elaborated that the embassy is located in West Jerusalem, an area broadly recognized under international law as being under Israeli jurisdiction, warning against deliberate attempts by his critics to mislead the Somaliland public.

Articulating a distinctly pragmatic foreign policy doctrine, President Cirro prioritized national survival over transnational religious solidarity.

"I was not elected to serve Palestine; I was elected to serve the interests of Somaliland," he stated bluntly.

He was careful to clarify that Somaliland has caused no harm to the Palestinian people and continues to support their fundamental right to self-determination, but insisted that Somaliland’s national interests must come first.

A Stern Message to the Islamic World

Addressing the international backlash, the President delivered a pointed historical reminder to the global Islamic community. For 35 years, Somaliland has tirelessly sought diplomatic recognition and support from the international community, particularly from Arab and Islamic nations, only to be met with deafening silence.

"Although Somaliland is a Muslim society with brotherly ties to the Islamic world, Islamic nations have refused to recognize our existence," he noted.

Defending his decision to embrace Israel as the first nation to officially recognize Somaliland's sovereignty, President Cirro framed the alliance as a simple matter of diplomatic reciprocity.

"We are friends with the country that recognized us. Diplomacy is built on mutual exchange. When Israel recognized us, we recognized them in return."

Sending a direct and stark message to the Islamic countries currently condemning his government, he added:

"We tell you, our brothers, we need you. You are our brothers, so acknowledge us. If you refuse to see us, at the very least, spare us your harm."

This statement exposed a deep-seated fatigue within Somaliland regarding the perceived hypocrisy of Middle Eastern politics, signaling a steadfast commitment to pursue alliances with whichever global powers are willing to acknowledge their statehood.

A Call to Former President Bihi and a Plea for National Unity

In his closing remarks, President Cirro extended an olive branch to his predecessor, former President Muse Bihi Abdi. He acknowledged that Bihi had dedicated immense time and effort to the pursuit of international recognition and was initially the first to celebrate the Israeli breakthrough when it was announced.

"To my friend Muse Bihi, I say you worked diligently to bring recognition, but today, as the President who replaced you, I am the one who delivered it. My friend Muse Bihi welcomed it, rushing from his farm to support the recognition," President Cirro remarked.

He directly urged the former president to remain consistent and not abandon his initial support for the diplomatic milestone due to partisan friction.

"Today, I say to my friend Muse, do not deviate from the reality you already accepted."

Concluding his powerful address, President Cirro called upon all opposition parties and political stakeholders in Somaliland to unify their stance on the international stage. He emphasized that the pursuit of global recognition and the fortification of national sovereignty are existential public interests that must transcend petty political disputes. For Somaliland to succeed, he argued, the nation must project a single, unified voice to the rest of the world.
