HARGEISA (July 2, 2026)Ā The political arena in the Republic of Somaliland has entered a highly volatile and sensitive phase. A fierce war of words has erupted between the President of Somaliland, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (Cirro), and the Chairman of the opposition KAAH party, Mohamud Hashi Abdi. At the heart of this escalating confrontation is the highly controversial decision by the new administration to open a Somaliland embassy in the city of Jerusalem, Israel, a move that has generated a political uproar both domestically and internationally.
Speaking to the press in Hargeisa, Chairman Mohamud Hashi delivered a comprehensive, uncompromising, and deeply passionate response to recent remarks made by President Cirro. During a recent WADDANI party central committee meeting, the President had publicly criticized the KAAH party's diplomatic stance. Hashi's meticulous rebuttal served to clarify his party's actual position, fiercely defend the former president, and launch a direct critique of the new administration's diplomatic conduct.

Disentangling State Recognition from the Jerusalem Embassy Debate
To dispel any political ambiguity surrounding his party's foreign policy, Mohamud Hashi made it unequivocally clear that the KAAH party fully supports the historic diplomatic recognition granted to Somaliland by the State of Israel. He emphasized that their opposition is strictly strategic and geographical, focusing solely on the location of the embassy in Jerusalem, and should never be misconstrued as a rejection of national recognition.
"When the President invited us to the presidential palace to inform us of Israel's recognition, we officially and warmly welcomed it," Chairman Hashi stated.
To underscore their support for the diplomatic milestone, Hashi revealed that the KAAH party had previously sent a formal letter of gratitude to the Israeli government. He added that his party highly praised Israel's defense of Somaliland's cause during a recent debate at the United Nations Security Council. Furthermore, KAAH strongly condemned the rhetoric delivered by the Federal Government of Somalia's representative at that very same UN meeting.
However, Hashi drew a firm red line regarding the embassy's location.
"Mr. President, our stance is absolutely clear. We are telling you and the leaders surrounding you to own up to the fact that you have abandoned the implementation of the National Constitution. You must own up to the fact that you have violated the protection of the sacred religious values of this nation," Hashi declared.
He pointedly argued that opening an embassy in Jerusalem fundamentally undermines the cultural values of the Somaliland public and violates a constitution that is deeply rooted in Islamic jurisprudence.
Accusations of Hypocrisy and WADDANI's Combative Legacy
The KAAH Chairman did not hold back in reminding the ruling WADDANI party of its own combative history. He accused President Cirro and his political base of glaring hypocrisy, recalling how WADDANI routinely attempted to sabotage major national agreements when they were seated on the opposition benches.
"Yesterday, they vehemently opposed the Memorandum of Understanding entered into by President Muse, claiming that because they were not consulted, they would not support it. They stood against crucial international agreements, including the DP World port deal, simply because they were the opposition," Hashi noted.
He drew a sharp contrast between the two political entities, asserting that KAAH is a constructive opposition dedicated to state-building.
"We are not a destructive opposition that actively works to dismantle the nation or poke holes in its progress, which is exactly how they behaved yesterday," he added.
Defending Muse Bihi and Condemning Presidential Taunts
One of the most remarkable and unexpected moments of the press conference was Hashi's passionate defense of former President Muse Bihi Abdi. Given that Hashi and Bihi experienced a massive political fallout six years ago resulting in Hashi's exit from the Kulmiye party, this defense demonstrated a high level of political maturity and respect for state institutions.
Hashi fiercely responded to a mocking comment made by President Cirro at the WADDANI conference, where Cirro joked that Bihi had "ran all the way from his farm barefoot" in glee and excitement when the Israeli recognition was first announced.
"When President Muse rushed from his farm, he did not come to you out of fear. The man is Muse, his actions were born out of pure statesmanship and nobility. It was highly inappropriate for you to respond to him with such mocking arrogance," Chairman Hashi stated, urging President Cirro to uphold the dignity of the office and respect the leaders who preceded him.
A Scathing Critique of an "Impoverished" Diplomacy
Turning his attention to the current administration's foreign policy, Hashi criticized the government for practicing what he termed "impoverished diplomacy", warning that such tactics damage the nation's dignity and disrupt delicate international alliances.
"We are telling you that Somaliland cannot be marketed globally through impoverished optics and impoverished, secretive travels," he remarked sarcastically, appearing to directly criticize the clandestine nature of the President's recent trips abroad.
He issued a stark warning that securing a diplomatic victory with Israel should not come at the cost of making enemies elsewhere.
"We are saying that the nation which recognized us deserves our gratitude. However, we must not throw away the other nations whose recognition we will desperately need tomorrow."
"A Clear Path, a Clear Message, and a Clear Goal"
As he concluded his address, Mohamud Hashi delivered a direct and fearless response to a previous taunt from President Cirro, who had challenged the opposition to "have some balls" and show bravery.
Radiating political confidence, Hashi fired back:
"Mr. President, insults from you will not deter us. You told us to show bravery. Well, it is with bravery that we are speaking to you right now. It is that same bravery we used to build you up yesterday when you were politically isolated." This poignant reminder highlighted the crucial support these political figures provided to the President during his most difficult electoral challenges.
Ultimately, the KAAH Chairman reaffirmed the unyielding nature of his party using Somali proverbs. "The KAAH party has made its stance clear in broad daylight. We do not call to prayer using a mere water jug, nor do we bury our heads in the sand like an ostrich," he stated.
He closed his powerful address by reminding the public that the KAAH party is defined by its steadfast vision, summarizing their political philosophy with their famous Northern Somali motto: "Hilin Cad, Hadal Cad, iyo Hadaf Cad"Ā (A Clear Path, a Clear Message, and a Clear Goal).
This escalating war of words clearly indicates that the debate over the Jerusalem embassy is no longer just a foreign policy issue. It has rapidly morphed into the central battlefield of Somaliland's domestic politics. How President Cirro's administration navigates this intense opposition pressure, coupled with the mounting criticism from the broader Islamic world, will undoubtedly define his political legacy and shape the social cohesion of Somaliland in the years to come.
