Minister Barkhad Batuun Suspends Commentary Programing on National TV

HARGEISAĀ (May 5, 2026) : The Minister of Information, Culture, and Awareness of Somaliland, Barkhad Jama Batuun, has issued an official decree suspending the popular program "Faallada Warka" (The News Commentary), which regularly aired on National Television and Radio Hargeisa. This decision, which took effect on the fifth of May, was justified in a statement from the minister's office as an effort to restructure and evaluate the quality of the news, while also protecting the prestige, dignity, and educational role of state media.

The "Faallada" program has had a long history and a profound influence within Somaliland's political landscape. In recent years, the program transformed into a platform that the ruling government used to harshly criticize opposition parties and anyone with dissenting views. The leadership of the Waddani party, to which Minister Barkhad Batuun currently belongs, was the primary target of this broadcast. At the time, Waddani leaders were deeply angered by the constant accusations and criticisms broadcasted through the taxpayer-funded media. This frequently created ideological divisions within society, ultimately diminishing public trust in the national broadcaster.

Minister Barkhad Batuun suspends the controversial 'Faallada Warka' program on Somaliland National TV.

The impact of "Faallada Warka" was not limited solely to domestic affairs; it also undermined Somaliland's diplomatic relations with countries in the region. Recently, the program focused on directing both direct and indirect criticism at neighboring countries, particularly the Republic of Djibouti. Foreign affairs analysts believe that suspending this program is a prudent step and a message of peace that the new government is sending to neighboring states, aimed at healing damaged relations and reviving regional cooperation.

Although this decision has been widely welcomed by various segments of society, domestic political critics express skepticism, suggesting that this measure might only be temporary. There is a strong possibility that once the political honeymoon period ends and the new government faces intense scrutiny from opposition parties, it may bring back this program or a similar format to use as a defensive political shield.

Ultimately, this step taken by Minister Barkhad Batuun is a major test to see whether the national media can remain an impartial entity for all citizens of Somaliland, completely free from being weaponized for political attacks. Time will tell if the suspension of "Faallada Warka" represents a genuine and lasting change, or if it is merely a temporary political tactic meant to calm public fervor.
