Somaliland Rejects Reports of an Israeli Base in Berbera Amid a Manufactured Media Campaign

Hargeisa, Somaliland — In recent days, reports have been rapidly circulating across global media claiming that the Israeli government is establishing a military base in the coastal city of Berbera to target the Houthi rebels in Yemen. The narrative, which was first published by Bloomberg, was quickly reproduced by more than 20 international media outlets. However, the government of Somaliland has categorically denied these reports, clarifying that no such discussions or military agreements have taken place.

This is not the first time sensitive, fabricated news regarding the relationship between Somaliland and Israel has been disseminated. The current situation vividly highlights an ongoing information war in the region, where official reality is repeatedly overshadowed by deliberately amplified propaganda.

The Somaliland government officially refutes Bloomberg reports regarding an Israeli military base in Berbera.

The Reality Behind the Bloomberg Report

The media frenzy ignited once again on March 11 after Bloomberg published a report stating that Israel was exploring the possibility of a base or security operation in Somaliland. The article quoted Somaliland's Minister of Presidency, Khadar Hussein Abdi, describing the bilateral cooperation as an evolving relationship that could reach a security level resulting in an "operational presence" on the coast.

This news was instantly morphed into distorted facts, heavily amplified by networks like Al Jazeera, and utilized as the foundation for warnings from Mogadishu against the region being used as a launching pad for military operations.

But Hargeisa’s response was swift and unequivocal. On March 15, Somaliland’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdirahman Dahir Adan, clearly stated that the reports were entirely false. He confirmed that the statements made by officials had been misinterpreted and that no secret military agreement or base had been granted to Israel. He firmly reiterated that the relationship between the two parties is strictly rooted in diplomatic and economic cooperation.

A Recurring Campaign: The Palestinian Refugee Narrative

Geopolitical analysts believe that the Berbera base narrative is part of a recurring media campaign that began shortly after Israel extended diplomatic recognition to Somaliland.

This latest episode bears a striking resemblance to the fabricated propaganda that was heavily circulated earlier this year, which falsely claimed that Somaliland was slated to settle Palestinian refugees relocated from the Gaza Strip. Although that narrative was published by major news agencies, the government in Hargeisa strongly denied it in January, clarifying that Israeli recognition never entailed population transfers or the provision of military bases.

Somaliland's stance has remained steadfast and unchanged: future diplomatic and economic cooperation is open for discussion, but a signed military agreement or a refugee settlement plan simply does not exist.

The Wilful Blindness of International Media

Perhaps the most surprising aspect of this reporting trend is how both Middle Eastern and international media outlets consistently ignore Somaliland's official responses.

In January, for example, the Middle East Eye broadcasted that an Israeli base in Somaliland was "on the table," completely omitting the clear, categorical denial issued by Somaliland's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Similarly, the majority of the 20-plus media outlets that republished the recent Bloomberg report refrained from fairly reporting the official denials issued by Somaliland's ministers.

While sensational claims about Israeli military bases and refugee relocations are turned into eye-catching headlines, the denials and factual clarifications from the Somaliland government are frequently buried or entirely excluded from the reports. This practice effectively strips away the journalistic balance and ethical standards expected in international news coverage.

Conclusion

The verifiable reality today rests on three clear facts. First, Somaliland has officially and repeatedly denied the existence of any military base agreement with Israel, as well as any plan to resettle Palestinians in its territory. Second, although international media outlets continue to exaggerate the strategic relationship between the two sides to generate journalistic tension, there is zero public evidence to suggest the approval of an official military agreement granting Israel a base in Berbera.

It is crucial for readers to carefully scrutinize these recurring, distorted narratives, whose ultimate purpose is often far removed from reporting the actual reality on the ground in the Republic of Somaliland. A diplomatic and economic relationship is indeed present and actively being pursued, but claims of a military base and refugee settlements remain entirely baseless.
