Opposition Alliance: Kulmiye and KAAH Issue Urgent Appeal Over Drought and Western Conflicts

Updated: Feb 16

HARGEISA, Somaliland — In a rare show of unified political strength, the two primary opposition parties, Kulmiye and KAAH, addressed the media jointly today to issue a "State of Emergency" appeal. The parties are calling for immediate humanitarian intervention to combat a devastating drought and a diplomatic surge to end the bloody inter-communal violence in the Awdal and Selel regions.

Mahmoud Hashi Abdi, Chairman of the KAAH political organization, and Abdiaziz Mohamed Samale, Vice Chairman of the Kulmiye party (the former ruling party, now the official opposition), urged the newly elected Waddani administration and the business community to mobilize resources for a desperate populace.

The Drought Crisis: "Unity Needed to Save Lives"

The drought currently gripping Somaliland’s hinterlands has reached a critical stage, with thousands of livestock reported dead and rural families facing acute water shortages. The two leaders emphasized that despite their opposition status, they are ready to support any government initiative aimed at saving lives.

"We call upon the titans of industry, the diaspora, and every person of means to show mercy to those suffering. The Waddani government must make drought relief its absolute number one priority," said Abdicaziz Samale.

The opposition leaders also expressed grave concern over the failure to stabilize the escalating conflict between brotherly clans in the country’s west. They accused the Waddani administration of lacking a coherent security strategy to halt the ongoing bloodshed.

Mahmoud Hashi Abdi stated: "It is a profound tragedy that while we face a natural disaster like drought, we are simultaneously shedding the blood of our brothers. We call on the local communities to embrace peace and for the government to fulfill its role as a neutral and effective mediator."

The Political Weight of the Kulmiye-KAAH Alliance

This joint appearance marks a significant shift in Somaliland’s political landscape following the recent transition of power:

  1. A Formidable Opposition: By aligning, Kulmiye and KAAH are signaling the formation of a powerful opposition bloc capable of challenging the Waddani administration on both humanitarian and security grounds.

  2. A Test for the New Government: This move uses the current humanitarian crisis as a benchmark to test the competence and responsiveness of the new leadership.

This appeal comes at a delicate moment as the Vice President embarks on a peace mission to the western regions. The public is now watching closely to see how the business community responds to this humanitarian call and how the Waddani government reacts to the pressure from an increasingly unified opposition.
