The President of the Republic of Somaliland, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi (Cirro), has taken a historic diplomatic step by appointing Dr. Mohamed Omar Hagi as the new ambassador to Israel. This move follows Israel's recent official recognition of Somaliland's independence and further strengthens the newly established relations between the two sides.
This appointment marks a golden chapter in Somaliland's history. Dr. Mohamed will go down in history as the first Somaliland ambassador to represent the nation in a fully recognized country that is a member of the United Nations and located in the Middle East since Somaliland regained its independence. The Protocol Department of the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs has officially approved his appointment, granting him the highest diplomatic credentials awarded to full ambassadors.

Who is the New Somaliland Ambassador to Israel?
Dr. Mohamed Omar Hagi is a diplomat, politician, and academic with deep expertise in foreign affairs and public administration. Prior to this new appointment, he served as the Advisor to the President for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. He is also widely remembered for his hard work in Asia, where he served as the Somaliland Representative to Taiwan.
His professional background is extensive. He previously served as a Senior Political Adviser at the Somaliland Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. In the economic sector, he advised the Ministry of Finance Development on strategic planning and macroeconomic policy reform. Before joining public service, Dr. Mohamed worked as an Executive Director, Programme Manager, and senior policy adviser for various international and United Nations agencies.
The Role of the Ambassador and Next Steps
Dr. Mohamed's arrival in Israel is not just about occupying an office but a national mission that requires modern diplomacy. The role of an ambassador in a country like this is rooted in building strong bridges that connect the citizens, governments, and businesses of both nations. The official next steps expected of him include the following:
Presenting Credentials: The first phase of his work is to formally present his diplomatic credentials directly to the President of Israel in a high-level protocol ceremony, which will fully authorize him to carry out his official duties.
Establishing the Embassy: He will be tasked with equipping and opening the first Somaliland embassy in Israel, which will serve as a central hub connecting the Horn of Africa and the Middle East.
Strengthening Strategic Cooperation: He is expected to accelerate dialogues and agreements regarding modern technology, agricultural development, and security cooperation in the Red Sea corridor, where both countries have major interests.
Attracting Investment: Finally, a major part of the ambassador's role is to encourage Israeli business leaders and major corporations to invest heavily in the untapped resources and business opportunities available in Somaliland.
