Somaliland's Representative to the United States, Bashir Goth, attended an international conference in the US to which Somaliland was formally invited. Organized by AIPAC, the summit brought together diplomats, US lawmakers, and officials from both the Democratic and Republican parties.
The gathering specifically focused on strengthening ties between the US and Israel. The Somaliland envoy met with various officials and influential figures advocating for Somaliland's cause, successfully highlighting the strategic interest Somaliland has in building new alliances.
Dr. J. Peter Pham, a diplomatic expert who closely monitors Horn of Africa affairs, posted pictures on his X social media account showing the Somaliland Representative at the AIPAC venue. Dr. Pham wrote:
""Among many friends at tonight’s @AIPAC Congressional Summit reception, especially delighted see @baruud, head of the Republic of #Somaliland’s mission in the #USA. #Israel is the first state to officially recognize Somaliland’s restored sovereignty. It won’t be the last!"

Somaliland has demonstrated its readiness to continue its cooperation with the US and Israel, viewing it as a crucial step for its political future. As stated by the Somaliland Representative to the US:
"WE ARE COMMITTED TO JOINING THE ABRAHAM ACCORDS, AND AT THE SAME TIME STRENGTHENING OUR COOPERATION WITH THE US AND ISRAEL."
What is AIPAC?
AIPAC, which stands for the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, is the largest pro-Israel lobbying group in the United States. It is an organization dedicated to strengthening the political, economic, and military relationship between Washington and Tel Aviv. The group works to unify the voices of American politicians to support legislation beneficial to Israel and its allies.
How Much Influence Does AIPAC Have?
AIPAC holds immense power that influences the decisions of the Presidency and both houses of the US Congress. It is one of the most feared and respected lobbying groups in American politics. AIPAC PAC reported providing over $53 million in direct support to 361 pro-Israel Democratic and Republican candidates during the 2024 election cycle.
Bipartisan Support: The organization connects politicians from both major parties, Democratic and Republican, ensuring that support for Israel remains an undisputed policy.
Financial Power: Their strength is based on securing and organizing robust campaign funding, which plays a major role in determining who wins key Congressional seats.
Policy Making: They heavily shape US foreign policy toward the Middle East, the Red Sea corridor, and the rest of the world.
How Can Somaliland Benefit from AIPAC?
Somaliland's participation in this forum and its relationship with AIPAC carry historic diplomatic opportunities. These benefits include:
Lobbying Platform: Somaliland can use this network to amplify its voice among the most influential members of the US Congress. Establishing ties with this organization could help Somaliland gain American political allies who can accelerate its quest for international recognition.
Investment and Security: The government's desire to join the Abraham Accords creates a new environment. This agreement, which enables Arab countries to establish full diplomatic relations with Israel, is a key to modern diplomacy. If Somaliland becomes an active participant, it is bound to attract international investment and security cooperation in the Red Sea corridor.
Escaping Political Isolation: Aligning with the strategic interests of the US-Israel alliance could lift Somaliland out of the prolonged political isolation that has hindered its diplomatic progress.
